LAFCA Presents: Los Angeles Plays Itself

- DIRECTOR
- Thom Andersen
SYNOPSIS
On Monday, September 15th, LAFCA and the Egyptian Theatre will welcome filmmaker Thom Andersen to discuss his landmark 2003 essay film Los Angeles Plays Itself in a conversation moderated by LAFCA members Ryan Swen and Jordan Cronk.
Winner of LAFCA’s Douglas Edwards Experimental/Independent Film/Video Award, Andersen’s film developed a legendary status as it garnered rapturous critical acclaim, but for many years was only available in special, rare theatrical settings. In his dazzling work, Andersen takes viewers on a whirlwind tour through Los Angeles’ real and cinematic history, spanning nearly 100 years, from the silent era to modern times. Like a detective in pursuit of an elusive adversary, Andersen investigates the myriad stories and legends that have come to define this 'dream factory.' With extensive research, and an abundance of clips, anecdotes and analysis, he adroitly peels back layers of fiction to reveal the real city and the actual lives of its denizens beneath the glaring lights.
