SYNOPSIS
ROBERT OSBORNE TRIBUTE AWARD SCREENING
Hailed by many as one of Federico Fellini’s finest features, this 1957 tragicomedy grew out of a character his wife, Giulietta Masina, had played in The White Sheik (1952). She only had one scene as the prostitute Cabiria, but it stuck with him. While working on another film, he was intrigued by a prostitute he met on location and started wandering the streets of Rome at night to observe similar women at work. As he set out to develop the screenplay on his next film, he combined what he’d observed with the character Masina had played and came up with the tale of a streetwalker who faces a series of unfortunate turns without losing her sense of hope. Though Masina’s character was rocked by misfortune, the picture was a winner, capturing the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Masina was also named Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival.
NIGHTS OF CABIRIA will be preceded with the awarding of the Robert Osborne Award to Bruce Goldstein, with special presenter John Turturro.
