On Tuesday, October 27, The Egyptian Theatre and Criterion will partner for a one-night-only event to celebrate the legacy and history of a Billy Wilder comic masterpiece!

Egyptian & Criterion Present: Some Like It Hot — Marilyn, Fashion & Salvatore Ferragamo will feature a screening of the 4K Restoration of Some Like It Hot starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe. Following the film, we’ll welcome actress and granddaughter of Salvatore and Wanda Ferragamo Martina Ferragamo, filmmaker and writer Simone Coppo and Simran Bhalla of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures to the stage for a discussion led by author Sam Wasson about Hollywood and fashion, the role of costuming in creating a character, the enduring influence of Some Like It Hot, and Marilyn’s longtime passion for “Shoemaker to the Stars” Salvatore Ferragamo – whose Hollywood Boot Shop originally opened in 1923 across the street from the Egyptian Theatre.

Marilyn Monroe was one of Salvatore Ferragamo’s most important clients, although she never met him or visited his Hollywood Boot Shop, which had closed years earlier. After moving to New York in 1954 to study at the Actors Studio, she began visiting Ferragamo’s Park Avenue store, where she ordered shoes that were made in Florence and shipped to the United States.

Ferragamo’s iconic stiletto heels enhanced Monroe’s posture and her unmistakable swaying walk, both sensual and elegant, which became one of the defining characteristics of her public image throughout her career.

The iconic stiletto heels designed by Ferragamo and worn by Monroe will be on display in the Egyptian lobby before and after the screening. The display will feature three original pumps worn by Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot or in her private life, alongside the original wooden last made from her foot and an original purchase order from the Park Avenue store.

In Some Like It Hot, Chicago musicians Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, in landmark performances) skip town by donning drag and joining an all-female band en route to Miami. The charm of the group’s singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe, at the height of her bombshell powers), leads them ever further into extravagant lies, as Joe assumes the persona of a millionaire to woo her and Jerry’s female alter ego winds up engaged to a tycoon.
