[Spielberg Theatre] CREATING
A MORE VISUALLY COMPREHENSIVE CINEMA (180 min.) This unique film aesthetics
seminar is designed to empower emerging filmmakers with greater artistic knowledge of how
to achieve the visual and aural potential of cinema. Film consultant Thomas Ethan Harris
addresses why it is important for new filmmakers to think more creatively about their

cinema. Film clips will be used to inspire an open dialogue with the audience.

old genres and formulas?
Still chasing that elusive dream?
It is time to get you back in touch with your creative instincts and discover a way to
really move your film career forward. While technology is in your favor to help you make
your film, do you really understand how to create complex and indelible images that will

Coppola, Fellini, Hitchcock, Scorsese and Tarantino's ability to visualize apart from

Before you finish that scripts before you shoot that filmtake this one of a kind,
ALL NEW, extremely motivating film aesthetics seminar that is designed to empower you with
greater artistic knowledge of how to achieve the visual and aural potential of cinema.
Film festival programmer and film consultant Thomas Ethan Harris
addresses why it is important for new filmmakers to think more deeply and more creatively
about the construction of their images and the necessity of creating a more intricate,
complex and personally realized cinema. Moving beyond the most basic forms of cinematic
language is essential to having the film career you want. Learning how to effectively
embrace and understand the functionality of the primary "visualizing components"
of great cinematic construction (the close-up, the long take, mise-en scene, color
schemes, film editing styles, sound design, production designs) is critical to
establishing yourself in the U.S.¹s crowded film arena. Film clips will be used to
inspire an open dialogue with the audience. The experience of watching over 17,000
independent feature films from emerging filmmakers (and even more shorts!) has given Mr.
Harris unique insight into the contemporary world of independent filmmaking and the
reasons why you must transcend it!
Because you have to know what¹s on cinema's horizons CREATING A MORE VISUALLY
COMPREHENSIVE CINEMA An Interactive Cinematic Forum. $12 Cinematheque Members, $15 Students/Seniors, $20 General.

Los Angeles Art Deco Architecture
Co-presented with the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles Lecture:
Between 1920 and 1940 the population of Los Angeles grew by more than 1 million.
To meet the needs of this explosive growth, the architects of the day were called on to
build a vast number of structures, most of them in the prevailing art deco style. More a
style of decoration than a type of architecture per se, art deco developed its own unique
look as it blossomed in L.A. Palm fronds, grape clusters, sunbursts, and ocean waves, all
symbols of the California arcadia, adorn the buildings of Los Angeles. The lecture will
include a synopsis of the metamorphosis of architectural style into what we now call Art
Deco; plus a virtual tour of a dozen buildings in the Historic Core including the William
Fox, Eastern Columbia, Title Guarantee & Trust and Oviatt Buildings, as well as works
by architects Parkinson & Parkinson, Styles O. Clements and Claude Beelman. Lecture by Jeffrey Bissiri A.I.A., architect, member of the ADSLA
preservation committee.
In light of the recent closure of the
Fairfax Theater on Beverly Blvd., this lecture will include a special presentation on this
endangered theatre which has been serving the Beverly/Fairfax community for 80 years. See
a video about the Fairfax.
Special ticket price for Art Deco Society Los
Angeles and Cinematheque Members: $5 all others $7. |
