In 1979, Robert Wise's STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE kicked off a mania for TV-to-movie
adaptations that has thrived ever since and spawned multiple sequels, tributes, and
spinoffs. To celebrate the STAR TREK film series, we've chosen some of the best films in
the franchise, plumbing deep for gems in the Trek universe that haven't necessarily
received the tribute they deserve. That includes a triple feature of the second, third and
fourth films in the series, as well as the new STAR TREK film, a movie that got a bold
send-off earlier this year - and kicks off our tribute to TREK this weekend. There's also
a 10th-anniversary screening of the affectionate homage to STAR TREK and its
fans, FREE ENTERPRISE. All of these films pay tribute to the ideas and
ideals of sci-fi's first franchise that have endured for more than 40 years. And we like
to think they will live long and prosper for many more.
