LOS ANGELES PLAYS
ITSELF, 2003, 169 min. Dir. Thom Andersen. A must see for Los Angeles
history buffs and cinema enthusiasts, who will marvel at the hundreds of archival and film
clips revealing an almost secret history of the City of Angels. "This cinematic
essay focuses on the discrepancy between the lived-in urban reality of Los Angeles and its
various century-deep cinematic mythologies, the movie is about more than just what the
movies get wrong. Its about the way the imaginary space of cinema intrudes upon the
actual space of our lives, so that the L.A. of the movies becomes a kind of separate urban
reality unto itself." Toronto Star Trailer | More

BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, 1999, Lionsgate, 105
min. Nearly a decade ago, director Wim Wenders and American guitarist Ry Cooder assembled
the legendary old-guard of Havana's musicians, some in their nineties, for a series of
recording sessions and concerts that Wenders filmed for the documentary that has become
legendary in its own right. Many of those musicians have now passed on, making this
document of their ageless energy and timeless legacy all the more vital. Performances
include: Ibrahim Ferrer ("the Cuban Nat King Cole"), Compay Segundo, Ruben
Gonzalez, Eliades Ochoa and Omara Portuondo. Presented in cooperation with Nonesuch
Records to mark the new release of "Buena Vista Social Club - The Carnegie
Hall Concert ," the group's sole U.S. performance, recorded ten years ago. More on this film

Fetish Film Series Night:
SALO, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM, 1975, MGM Repertory, 117 min. Dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini. Be prepared, SALO is not for the weak of heart.
The polar opposite of the "Trilogy Of Life" (which includes the maestros
THE DECAMERON, ARABIAN NIGHTS and THE CANTERBURY TALES), SALO depicts with cold precision
the sexual and psychological atrocities visited on sixteen young men and women, held
hostage by a group of depraved nobles at the end of WWII. Pasolini based the film on a
notorious book by the Marquis de Sade, but transposes the setting from 18th century France
to the last days of Mussolini's regime in the republic of SALO. With costumes by Danilo Donati and production design by Dante Ferretti so perfect, it
plays like a fashion advert. One of the most controversial and widely censored films ever
made (it took over 25 years for the uncut version to screen in England), SALO has lost
none of its power to shock and disturb, or as fetish film series curator Rick Castro puts
it, "the best film ever made, separates the men from the
boys." With Paolo Bonacelli, Giorgio Cataldi, Umberto Quintavalle. More

18 will be admitted to the screenings.] Audience participation discussion with series
curator Rick Castro following the screening. (See www.rickcastro.com and www.antebellum.us.ms for more information.) This series is for audiences 18 and over.

THE GITS, 2008, Liberation Entertainment, 82 min. With an
innovative sound that coupled hardcore punk with heartfelt blues, the Seattle band The
Gits was poised to break into the mainstream. But they would never achieve the success of
contemporaries Nirvana and Pearl Jam because on July 7, 1993, singer Mia Zapata was found
murdered the victim of a rape/homicide. It was a crime unsolved when director Kerri
OKane began shooting her debut feature. In the interim, however, fans, friends and
celebrities like Joan Jett (interviewed here) and Nirvana helped raise money to reopen
what had become a cold case file. Mias death had reverberated throughout the music
community, and unexpectedly Mias killer was brought to justice as the cameras
rolled. "If you never saw The Gits perform live, the film offers a glimpse into a
world that is now Seattle legend." Gene Stout, Seattle
Post-Intelligencer; "For those who knew The Gits in their prime, the movie is
a testament to the power of their music, and the promise unfulfilled." Sam
Adams, Los Angeles Times; "[A] revealing documentary
about female
power, male violence and the persistence of allies." Lisa Kennedy, Denver
Post. For more info on the film: http://www.thegitsmovie.com/
